Former Police officer here. They may not seem to be going to an emergency but they may be responding to something that requires some urgency. There times when officers will not use lights and sirens, its not always necessary.
The Short Answer
Former Police officer here. They may not seem to be going to an emergency but they may be responding to something that requires some urgency. There times when officers will not use lights and sirens, its not always necessary. Same thing applies to parking. If they have to get into a store to arrest a shoplifter who is resisting or fighting store personnel, An officer would not and should not take time to park in an appropriate space. Most if not all agencies will state in their SOP's that they should make all attempts to obey all traffic laws. Having said that, if all officers did this, they probably would not catch up to most offenders, some of which could be a serious hazard to the public. Of course there are exceptions where a cop is just trying to get somewhere in a hurry for personal business. These occasions are pretty rare in my experience. So it may seem like they are just abusing their power but there is probably a good reason they are disobeying traffic laws.
