The Short Answer

Sunni Muslim here. Let me tell you my entire family and most of my friends are Sunni but I have known some great Shias in my life. If a Shia goes to a Sunni mosque he would be welcome and vice versa. The divide has been exploited by politicians. For example, Sunni Saddam Hussein and Shia Ruhollah Khomeini have used this to fuel propaganda against eachother. Truth is the average Sunni or the average Shia won't hate eachother, they will however call eachother heretics. We Sunnis call them heretics because they created extra practises. They call us heretics because they think we have wrong beliefs. If you want I can explain further.
