The Short Answer
While frankly kind of ridiculous, the current system helps to even out the playing field. Without access to some form of financial aid, intelligent but poor individuals would be unable to get a higher education from a good university. All that being said, our current system is completely broken because it encourages everyone to study what they love at the best university that they can get into. This is a losing game, but we are the first generation to play it, so we got the shaft. By the time my future kids start college, I have a feeling that everyone will be telling them something very different.
